We live in a world where the entire web of life depends upon the light of the Sun. In fact, at the core of our genetic biology, within our DNA, are molecules called biophotons that release light emissions when excited and illuminated.[i] That’s right, according to research, our DNA can store and emit photons of light![ii]

On the nature of light, Edgar Cayce said in the reading, “What is Light? That from which, through which, in which may be found all things, out of which all things come. Thus, the first of everything which may be visible in earth, in heaven, and in space is of the Light, is that Light” (2533-8).  When asked how light rays affect health, he replied, “There is no functioning of any portion of the system which functions through the nervous system not affected by rays of light, or, in other words, life itself in manifested form is vibration, of which light is a part. Now get that!” (165-8) In the readings, Cayce repeatedly recommended exercising outdoors in the open air and sunlight, though he did emphasize sunbathing cautiously: “Sun baths are of benefit to most bodies; would be helpful to this body if not too much is given” (5455-1). In another reading, he said, “The sun during the period between eleven or eleven-thirty and two o’clock carries a great quantity of the actinic rays that make for destructive forces to the superficial circulation” (934-2).  For light therapy, Cayce recommend using the ultra-violet light (sometimes covered with green glass), or other colors such as red and blue that produce heat such as “any penetrating light. That of the dry heat, or that that acts quickest with the bloodstream, see? …All bacilli or all germs are afraid, as it were, of light – or light is destructive to all. Some, as is seen, accumulate in heat that is not penetrating. Hence the variation in the quartz, the ultra-violet light, the blue light, the red light – each one taking out that that filters through the system. Hence for this, that one most penetrating without being destructive to the tissue proper” (140-21).

Our current research confirms many of Cayce’s holistic recommendations. We know sunlight has many positive benefits to our bodies, including producing vitamin D. For most people, about 15-30 minutes of sun exposure each day is sufficient, and be cautious of spending too much time, especially during peak hours. Sunlight can directly affect our mood as individuals with depression can suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD) from not receiving enough sunlight. It is important to use full-spectrum lighting indoors. There’s research evidence that suggests using blue and red LED lights may help skin conditions such as acne, sun damage, and wound healing, as well as destroy bacteria and reduce inflammation.

In the future, we might be able to develop more light-based technologies to heal ourselves. It could be possible to use light to activate our DNA, encode genetic information in light wavelengths, and learn how to modulate light frequencies to treat pathogens and heal disease. Currently in development are “photodynamic” drugs that, when given to localized cancer tissue, then light activated to switch them on to help destroy the tumor. Where light is concerned, the future is very bright!

If you want to learn more about natural, holistic healing from the Edgar Cayce readings, then I would strongly encourage you to check out my upcoming seminars in January and March at EdgarCayce.org.  You can attend in person or virtually.  In January, I’ll be joined by other top health professionals for a great weekend where I’ll be teaching about how to have a Healthy Heart and prevent disease, but also how to have a Healthy Mind and improve memory and cognitive functioning.  In March, I’ll be dedicating an entire weekend to Heal Thy Self and will be teaching the 12 Natural Healing Forces.  Hope to see you there!
